Jared Okun just started his first year at Otsego College where he wants to study child care and music. The above pic is him in his new dorm room!!  He has worked at a local pizza kitchen until leaving for college and has been an avid volunteer in his community. He says, “It is important for me to give back to the community that once gave me support. ”  He has volunteered at the local YMCA  where he was a caregiver in the infant room, and also at GIGI’S Playhouse. He is a self proclaimed “Family Man…”

Jared-mom Randi

Jared with his Mom, Randi, at a college welcoming party.

Jared also says, “My disability has no impact on my goals. I am a hard worker and love a good challenge.” His brother, Jake Okun, also a college student, made this video “More Than Meets the Eye.”  It is a look into Jared’s life and how he has impacted his family’s lives and those around him. One of my favorite moments in this video is when his stepfather says that the biggest thing he has taken away from having Jared in his life is his ability to “live in the moment.” His mom also says that she has learned to “celebrate more.”  I can totally relate to both of these having Ruby in my life. She helps me celebrate even the tiniest of accomplishments everyday…and all of her responses are so true and pure. She makes me want to try harder at everything I do because her determination is infectious…and her laughter is contagious.

Please take a moment to enjoy this video. As always, stay tuned for more updates!
